Key Philippines Typhoon Contributor Rick Upshaw Hospitalized in Manila
Rick Upshaw, key contributor and founder of the Philippines Typhoon website, was confined to a hospital in Manila today as a result of what appears to be food poisoning. Although we have written about Rick Upshaw elsewhere on this site expressing gratitude for all that he’s done, as we pray for Mr. Upshaw’s speedy recovery, we thought it would be appropriate to write a little about Rick Upshaw here so that visitors to this site could know more about him. We hope you will indulge us and get to know Rick Upshaw, the man that he is, and what he’s done (and what he’s trying to do) for the Philippines, and what he has done (through this site) for victims of the Philippines typhoons and resulting Philippines flood.

Who is Rick Upshaw?
Rick Upshaw: A Little Background
Rick Upshaw is an American citizen who hails from the State of Texas. He is an entrepreneur who particularly has a passion for small business. He is also a blogger, trainer, consultant and expert in pretty much every aspect of small business and entrepreneurialism, especially in the areas of sales and marketing, including internet marketing, social media and even outsourcing. In our own experience, we believe that there is no one better at helping businesses and business professionals dominate the search engines for their targeted keywords and keyword phrases. He is solely responsible for helping our cause do that for our targeted keywords, which has quite likely saved the lives of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who otherwise would not have had food, clothing and shelter due to a lack of funding. We believe that the additional awareness of the plight of Philippines typhoon and Philippines flood victims would not have happened without the efforts of this one man: Rick Upshaw.
When Rick Upshaw started his first company, American Enterprises, back in 1989, his passion for the small business entrepreneur was focused entirely on American small business and American entrepreneurialism. Today, his passion has “expanded” somewhat, as you will see below.
In early 2004, he met Myla Agulay, a citizen of the Philippines on a Christian dating website, and ultimately married her in Makati here in the Philippines in November of 2005. Through her, Mr. Upshaw developed a passion for the Philippines, particularly in the area of helping to provide work for Filipinos, so that they can provide for their families.
To date, Mr. Upshaw and his family spend a great deal of time here in the Philippines as he continues to offer consulting and training services to client call centers as well as working on other projects, many of which are specifically designed to provide desperately needed jobs to the Filipino work force.
Rick Upshaw: Founder of the Philippines Typhoon Website
More relevant to this website, when a series of deadly Philippines typhoons hit our country in late 2009, Rick Upshaw was here in Manila and was immediately ready to help. Through one of his companies, American Marketing Solutions, Mr. Upshaw donated this Philippines Typhoon website and led a group of internet professionals from all over the world on donating all of the search engine marketing efforts for this website, even doing most of the work himself initially until others came on board and followed his lead. (See the “Contributors” section of our website for more details). Even while the typhoons were pounding our shores and the Philippines flood waters were rising right outside the door of his office and home, Rick Upshaw stayed in his office in front of his computer for 70+ hours straight to build what would ultimately be the Philippines typhoon website! The only thing that finally stopped him (until the storms were over) was the fact that he finally lost power at his office! It is also our understanding that when the power finally went out in Mr. Upshaw’s office, he went outside to find himself completely surrounded by the Philippines flood waters and ended up saving his entire village from pooling flood waters by smashing holes in the security walls surrounding the village so that the flood waters could drain out! We’ll try to find out more about this and update this post accordingly.
Rick Upshaw: Helping Victims in Haiti
When an earthquake devastated Port-au-Prince in Haiti, we felt that officials in Haiti should be aware of what Rick Upshaw did for this Philippines typhoon website and its part in raising awareness of the need for ongoing assistance for Philippines typhoon and Philippines flood victims; so we contacted the Haitian embassy in Washington, D. C. and told them about what Rick Upshaw did for the Philippines typhoon victims, including the development and marketing of the Philippines Typhoon website. To make a long story short, Rick Upshaw once again stepped up and donated a website to help raise public awareness for the ongoing plight of the Haitian people. The site is currently under development at http://HaitiDisasterAssistance.org. Just as he did with the Philippines Typhoon website, Mr. Upshaw is once again leading a team of internet pros from all over the world in marketing the Haiti Disaster Assistance website all over the internet.
If his efforts for the Haiti Disaster Assistance website are anything like what he did for us here in the Philippines, Rick Upshaw and the team he is leading from all over the world will quite literally be responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people who might otherwise not have been helped due to a lack of funding for assistance efforts. Our prayers go out to the victims of the Haiti Disaster.

The Seeds He’s Planted Here
Although Rick Upshaw started the Philippines typhoon website alone, this website is now run by a group of anonymous volunteers who maintain the website and continue working to raise awareness for the victims of the Philippines typhoon crisis and the resulting Philippines flood. Obviously, Rick Upshaw is not alone in his efforts to help Philippines typhoon and Philippines flood victims. However, between his continuing efforts for this website, and his heroic efforts during the Philippines typhoon and resulting Philippines flood, Rick Upshaw continues to show his dedication for the Philippines and our people.
Many of the volunteers for the Philippines typhoon website are citizens of the Philippines. As Filipinos, we observe among our own people that it is rare to find someone who displays such a passion for our country and its people. We are both honored and humbled that a man who is not even a citizen of our country could take such an interest in the future of the people of the Philippines. Rick Upshaw is a credit to the citizens of the United States of America, and represents a level of honor and loyalty to which we believe that Filipinos everywhere should aspire. Such a man doesn’t deserve to be taken down in the prime of his life over something as petty as food poisoning. We wish Rick Upshaw a speedy recovery, and our prayers go out to his family.

Typhoon Parma / Peping hits Philippines Day 2
Last night was furious enough but today, as we tried to get out of the area, Typhoon Parma struck again with high winds and flash floods our van stalled in a flash flood and started washing backward down the road between Sanchez Mira and Laoag, which had become a river.

Typhoon Ondoy (Taft Avenue, Vito Cruz Area)
A flash flood took the entire Manila by surprise! A raging river occurred in the streets of Taft Avenue where we got stuck. We were trying to get out to catch a flight to Ninoy Aquino International Airport but failed. This video is the actual footage before we actually submerged in the waist line deep flood waters from Typhoon Ondoy’s wrath. Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the Airport and surrendered just a few kilometers away and went back to our original post. Rain subsided after 8-10 hours. But the streets were all impassable.
